About This Item
Oxford University Press, 1939. Hardcover. Very Good. in x in x in. Inked name on title page. No other markings in book. No DJ. Small discolorations on boards. Binding tight. Caught up in the exoticism and allure of Siam, a kingdom still immune to Westernization, Maugham had visited Bangkok several times and, happily, selected that setting for his fairy tale. September is the youngest of nine daughters of the King (each is named for a month of the year). All nine are beautiful, and each has been presented with a beautiful green parrot in a golden cage by their father. September's parrot dies inexplicably, and she is inconsolable until a little bird hops into her room and begins to sing enchantingly. What happens when September cages her new found pet at the urging of her jealous sisters provides the core of this appealing tale with its worthwhile moral. Richard C. Jones's stylized illustrations - some in full color.
