About This Item

New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1902. Scottish/Canadian newspaperman Robert Barr (1849-1912), who also wrote under the pseudonym "Luke Sharp," was a friend of Conan Doyle and sometimes was a co-author with Robert Louis Stevenson. This is a Near Fine copy of the Second Impression of the First Edition (stated "Published, May, 1902, R" and "Second Impression"), An uncommon title, and this second impression was printed in the same month as the first. This is a Near Fine copy. Bright blue cloth binding with gilt titling and decorations on the spine; also designated "Special Edition" on the foot of the spine. This is actually a much nicer binding than the First. Quercus speculates that the publisher was perhaps pleasantly surprised by the book's popularity! Clean text; x, 340 pages, with two pages of adverts in the rear (featuring Doyle's "Hound of the Baskervilles"). Frontis illustration, and 14 others, by Edmund J. Sullivan. Top edge is gilt. Slight bumping to the bottom corners; some tiny spots on the rear cover; a bit of a splay. A really nice copy. No dustjacket; in an archival plastic protector.. Second Impression. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine/No Jacket. Illus. by Edmund J. Sullivan. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
