About This Item
London: John Murray, 1873. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. The second UK edition of Tylor's most famous two-volume work on culture and civilisation, an uncommon work. The second edition of this uncommon two-volume work in the publisher's original cloth bindings. Library bookplates of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, to the front paste downs. Edward Burnett Tylor (1832-1917) was a founding figure of social anthropology, and his works assisted in the development the discipline of anthropology in the nineteenth century. This two-volume study of culture is his most famous work. The first volume, which originally had the subheading 'The Origins of Culture', covers ethnography, including social evolution, language, and mythology. The second volume, which originally had the subheading 'Religion in Primitive Culture', mainly provides his interpretation of animism, a term he reintroduced into common use. 32 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volume II. In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Externally fairly smart, with fading to the spines and to the front board of Volume II. Shelf wear to the front board of Volume I. Small shelf numbers to the spine of each volume. Small stamp to the front free end papers. Very Good
