About This Item

London, Printed by J.M. for Richard Chiswell , 1673. First edition, 8vo. pp. [xl], 352, [viii], 439, [i]. Frontispiece facing the imprimatur leaf engraved by William Sherwin. Contemporary panelled calf, minor wear, neat recent morocco lettering piece. Ownership inscriptiuon of Robert Edwards, Bala, dated 1769; 19th century book label of C.M. College Library, Bala. The Calvinistic Methodist College, latterly the Bala-Bangor Theological Seminary, was a Welsh congregationalist seminary established in 1842. Sherwin is an interesting figure, a pioneer of mezzotint priting and (probably more successfully) of calico priting in Europe (ODNB). William Cave is known for his works of patristic scholarship and church history. ‘Primitve Christianity’ was his first book, in which his stated purpose was ‘to outline the 'pure' condition of the early church in order to provide an exemplar for pious life in his own time’.
