About This Item
New York: William Morrow and Company, 1962. Hardcover. Illustrations by Leonard Everett Fisher. 8vo. Red cloth with white lettering and emblem. 128pp. Illustrations. Very good. Internally tight and fine, with just minor scuffing to front board. Tight and nice first edition of one volume from Johnson's "The Government" trilogy for young adults (other two being "The Congress" and "The Supreme Court") -- with a twist: Front flyleaf bears a choice presentation inscription from a two-time presidential contender to a namesake grandson, boldly penned in black ink: "For Adlai E. Stevenson IV / from Gerald W. Johnson -- / by Adlai E. Stevenson II / April 1962." Illinois Governor Stevenson (1900-65) lost twice to Dwight D. Eisenhower (1952 and 1956) and at the time of this inscription was serving as U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Fisher's woodcut illustrations are quite striking.
