[6], 931, [1] pp. Photo frontisp. of Japan’s Emperor & Empress, photo-illust. half-title, decorated title bordered in gilt & blue, numerous colour plates (tissue guards), 100s of photo & text illustrations (many colour-tinted, some large double-page), 1 large folding colour map. Publisher’s full brown calf over beveled boards, gilt & black globe on front cover, raised bands on spine, gilt ornamented borders, spine, gilt lettering on spine, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. (hinges nicely repaired, minor shelfwear, wear to corners), still a VG bright copy, w/ bookseller’s label on rear flyleaf. First edition of this massive, and lavishly illustrated history of Taisho-era Japan on the eve of the Jazz Age, and filled with 100s of photos of Japanese cities, including Tokyo & Yokohama before the massive 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. Along with the many articles on the countryside, cultural history, economic growth and industries, there are a number devoted to specific cities in Japan including Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Yokahama, Nagasaiki, Moji, Shimonoseki, and Tokyo. Of particular interest is the substantial portion devoted to Kwantung (Guangdong), a territory in the southern part of the Liadong Peninsula controlled and ruled by Japan until 1945; Korea, or Chosen as it was referred to by the Japanese filled with many photographs, and Taiwan (Formosa), as well as the southern half of Sakhalin Island called Karafuto, but was retaken Russia after World War II.
