Sartre began writing the book that would become Les Mots (originally titled Les Affections du cœur) in 1952-1953, then abandoned it in 1956 before resuming it and publishing it in 1963. We know several fragmentary preparatory texts (from one to ten folios for the longest), which are preserved at the BnF and were published in the edition of the Pléiade in a section entitled "Vers Les Mots" The manuscript we present here, however, remains one of the most valuable that can be found because of its thematic density.

Sartre and "bovarysm": It should be noted that this occurrence does not appear in the final text of Les Mots. Sartre, as we know, had a strong interest in Madame Bovary, having read Flaubert's work many times. For the young Sartre, Flaubert's work was part of a life project, between the challenge to adults and the children's comedy (Sartre et la tentation Bovary – F. Noudelmann)

It is finally interesting to observe the unity of this folio, with a 'beginning' and an 'end', unlike other isolated fragments that we find by the same author.

This manuscript, which has remained unpublished, does not appear in the foretexts of Les Mots (Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, ed. Jean-François Louette, 2010).
