About This Item
New York: Phaidon Publishers, Inc., (1948). First American issue. edition. Quarto, flexible red cloth covers, 49 pages of text, followed by an unpaginated section of 94 black and white plates. Printed in England. In his 1965 study "Pre-Raphaelitism: A Biblio-Critical Study", William Fredeman considered this book to be, " in general the best book of illustrations available, though the quality of the registration is very poor. John Gere's catalogue is excellent and authoritative". Subsequent years have seen far superior collections of illustrations produced. But still of use are Ironside's text and Gere's catalogue. Worn and frayed at spine ends, one corner tipped is frayed and bared, else about very good, lacking the dust jacket. Fredeman 83.8.
