[ANONYMOUS].

Practical Economy: or, the application of modern discoveries to the purposes of domestic life.

London : Henry Colburn & Co, 1822. Second edition. First published 1821. Printed by Shackell & Arrowsmith, London.

Duodecimo (200x115mm) quarter bound cream over green paper boards, cream typed spine label, edges untrimmed, xi,[1],379,[1 blank],[4 publisher's advertisements]pp; π⁴,B-Q¹²,a¹².  Simple twentieth century binding, boards slightly scuffed, original endpapers faintly foxed; top edge a trifle dusty.

Intended for wealthy householders, advice is given on the arrangement of a house, taking care of furnishings and belongings, leisure activities, household stores, cleaning, laundry, the larder, dairy, cellars, garden and poultry, domestic accidents, travel and on dealing with the poor.  An interesting philosophical discourse on how to economise by doing things properly yet cheaply rather than just retrenching.  From the preface: "To save is one thing, to economise is another.  Absolutely to avoid expense, is to preclude enjoyment; but to economize expenditure, is to unite enjoyment with prudence."

Topics addressed include such things as the preservation of meat, flour adulteration, yeast, preserving, the ice-house, the beer, wine and spirits cellars (intriguing instructions on ageing and selecting wines) ; kitchen gardens; managing a hothouse etc.

Scarce.
