First Edition Thus (1998), First Printing indicated by a complete numerical sequence. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only a hint of wear to extremities; sparse, very faint foxing to the fore-edge and bottom edge; a tiny soil spot at the top edge; a single page has been dog-eared; the expected light tanning to the text pages due to aging; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Bright and Clean. Corners sharp. Not absolutely perfect, but very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. (6.8 x 4.25 x 1 inches). 322 pages.Language: English. Weight: 6 ounces. First published in hardcover by Putnam in 1997. Mass Market Paperback. Gerry 'The Bee' Boyle (born 1956) is an American novelist. "Potshot" is Boyle's fourth Jack McMorrow Mystery, a series which began with "Deadline" in 1993 and which had reached a full dozen novels by 2019. Gerry Boyle has an uncanny eye for the dangers and disquiet that can lie just beneath the sleepy surfaces of rural Maine. Boyle's Jack McMorrow series has often been compared to Robert B. Parker's Spenser books. The comparison is apt, as these are tightly written, well-plotted stories with plenty of dry humor. I found Potshot to be one of the best of the McMorrow series. Boyle has a well-chiseled writing style, avoiding stereotypes and easy plot devices. The legalized pot movement is certainly ripe for satire, but even through the sweet-smoke haze, each character is fully drawn and employed to further the plot rather than just for comic relief. Let it be said, finally, that Boyle writes well enough that we can lay aside associations with Parker and his hero. Gerry Boyle Jack McMorrow novels can stand on their own.
