About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG+/VG.Neat,ink,donor's gift inscrptn to ffe,and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,glossy laminated, illustrated dw/dj; with miniscule rubbing+chipping with reciprocal loss to both head+foot of spine/backstrip,edges and all corners. An inherent fault, due to breakdown of laminate, with the passage of time - but to a lesser degree than normally experienced for this title/book. Dw/dj internally repaired, with brown adhesive/gummed tape to both head+foot of spine/backstrip,and a slight vertical, diagonal wrinkle in laminate to rear wrap - production fault? Top+fore-edges slightly aged and discoloured, contents generally bright, tight and clean. Publisher's original, plain green cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and clean, plain white eps.Book has a slight lean.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,9-253pp [paginated] includes 27 chapters, plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication, contents list and 2pp blanks to rear. First edition, first printing of the last Tommy and Tuppence Beresford mystery.Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, now retired, move into a house in Devonshire. In an old children's book left in the attic,Tuppence finds cryptic clues to a murder which took place in the village during the First World War.The girl who died was mixed up in an old scandal to do with the passing on of naval secrets. But was she innocent or guilty? Intrigued,Tommy and Tuppence investigate. But few of those in the village at the time are left alive. And their memories are confused or failing. It was such a long time ago.For the rest,it is all hearsay - often contradictory hearsay at that.Yet from these disconnected items of information,a pattern slowly begins to emerge.Tommy and Tuppence are on surer ground after Tommy's visit to a Mr Robinson in London. Then Colonel Pikeaway of MI5 takes a hand.Although the murder is such an old one, there are signs that someone is anxious it should not be revived.Suddenly Tommy and Tuppence are in danger, though no one can guess from what source, nor why their raking up of the past should be so bitterly resented. What can it matter now? Agatha Christie weaves a spellbinding mystery strung between past and present,in which the dog Hannibal plays a considerable part.
