About This Item
New York: Camera Club of New York, 1899. Published in Camera Notes, volume 3, number I (July 1899). Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Alfred Stieglitz had founded. Image size is 6 inches by 4 inches. Gertrude Kasebier (1853-1934), a leading photographer in the photo-secessionist movement is perhaps best known for her excellent portraits. Alfred Stieglitz recognized her talent when he selected five (!) of her photographs for inclusion in the July 1899 issue of his new magazine Camera Notes. In explaining that decision Stieglitz declared that she was "beyond dispute, the leading artistic portrait photographer of the day." The portrait offered here is one of Kasebier's finest. It was highly appreciated by Frances Benjamin Johnston, who had the photogravure in her personal collection until she donated it to the Library Of Congress in 1948. The photogravure is in excellent condition: a superb impression that is in virtually as-new condition. Now archivally matted in an off-white passe-partout and ready to be framed in a standard 11" by 14" frame... First Edition Thus. Paper. Fine. Illus. by Gertrude Kasebier. 6 inches by 4 Inches. Photo.
