About This Item

Large octavo 22.6x15.5 cm., stiff wrappers, 36pp. Photocollage cover design by Anton Lavinskii (1893-1968). A novella. Osip M. Brik (1888-1945) was a writer and literary critic who identified with the Futurists and the avant-garde. He was a founder of IZO Narkompos and wrote screenplays. He was close to and promoted the work of Rodchenko. He famously shared his marriage bed with Mayakovsky, and also worked for the Cheka. His wife Lili also did, running errands for them. Mayakovsky was initially impressed by the security services protecting the revolution; he and other artists and writers viewed themselves as the bulwark of the revolutions's call for social and economic transformation and assumed they were supported by the Cheka. That naivete was dispelled as they witnessed the arrest, torture, imprisonment and execution of their kind. The artist Anton Levinskii is an under-appreciated painter and book artist. This is a fine cover design. MOMA 472, Getty 103. A very good copy.
