About This Item
San Francisco: Sierra Club Books, 1969. First thus. Hardcover. Fine/Near fine. Robert Osborn, Illustrator. An apparently uncommon illustrated hardcover edition (with no other copies available online as of this writing), published the year after The Population Bomb was first released as a mass market paperback in 1968. Inscribed by Ehrlich on the title page: "For Carl & Estelle, with warm regards, Paul Ehrlich." A deeply influential and controversial book about overpopulation and resource scarcity that has defined Ehrlich's distinguished career and perhaps overshadowed his achievements in conservation biology. The book was called alarmist by some, but Ehrlich years later said that "perhaps the most serious flaw in The Bomb was that it was much too optimistic about the future." Also of interest is the fact that it was co-authored by Paul's wife Anne Ehrlich, but the publisher insisted on crediting just Paul. A fine book in a near fine jacket a little rubbing, light edge wear, a half-inch inconspicuous tear to upper corner of the front panel at the flap fold. A nice find.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
