About This Item
London and Edinburgh: W. & R. Chambers, 1870. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. A scarce edition of this collection of amusing rhymes and short poems traditional to Scotland. A scarce edition of this work from Scottish publisher, geologist and editor Robert Chambers, first published in 1826. With an illustrate vignette title page, Chambers includes chapters on lullabies, rhymes of the nursery, rhymes connected with superstitions and 'miscellaneous puerile rhymes', amongst other topics. He informs the reader, in his preface, that these works are 'the production of rustic wits, in some the whimsies of mere children, and originally were designed for no higher purpose than to [...] enliven the sports of the village green'.With the former owner's bookplate of Colin Currie to the front pastedown. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards are bright, with discolouration to back strip and significant bumping to spine head and tail. Former owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with some spotting to the first and last few pages. Very Good
