About This Item

Paris: Faber & Faber, 1933. Paperback. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. Paris, Faber & Faber, 1933 (first UK edition)/ 1927. Octavo, 24 pages (including initial and terminal blanks). Plain saddle-sewn card covers with the attached unclipped pale green dustwrapper (lightly sunned and marked); two tiny puckered spots to the leading margin of an early leaf; an excellent copy. This short collection of 13 poems was sold for 1/- (12 pennies) or 12 francs, hence 'Pomes Penyeach' (the thirteenth poem being the 'tilly', the Irish term for the thirteenth item in a 'baker's dozen', and also the title of the first poem).

Slocum and Cahoon 28.

Synopsis

Pomes Penyeach is a collection of thirteen short poems. It was written over a twenty-year period from 1904 to 1924 by the novelist James Joyce and originally published on 7 July 1927 by Shakespeare and Co. for the price of one shilling (twelve pennies) or twelve francs. The title is a play on "poems" and “pommes” (the French word for apples) which are here offered at “a penny each” in either currency.
