Princes Street, Hanover Square, London: T & J Allmann, 1822. Illustrated with three simple hand-coloured plates, octavo, pp xii, 378, extremely clean and sound inyternally, half calf and marbled boards, raised bands and leather label to the spine, very slight signs of wear. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Charles William Hamilton, 2nd Baronet, and his small neat signature on the title page. [Phillips lived much of his life on the south coast, and gained a national reputation as a landscape gardener. His first plan for the development of a lrge site in Kemp Town, Brighton, was rejected, but the second attempt five years later was accepted. His grandiose Anthaeum project, an elaborate indoor botanical garden topped by "the largest dome in the world", ended in disaster when the structure spectacularly collapsed just before its official opening. His ideas on the layout of plants and flowers in relation to their surroundings were influential. When Brighton and Hove City Council restored the gardens and grounds of the Royal Pavilion to show how they would have appeared at the height of the Regency era, they did so according to Phillips' ideas - specifically his belief that "a well-planted shrubbery depends on the selection of trees and shrubs which succeed each other in blossoming throughout the year, as well as contrasting shades of green ... and under-planted flowers".]. Second edition. Half Leather. Very Good.

Description:
London : Orr and Smith , 1835 A nice copy of this rare work. It originated as an article for the British Cyclopaedia of Natural History, and was enlarged for separate publication to give readers a systematic introduction to the science of Botany. In original pebbled brown cloth with gilt title on spine, and gilt edges to pages. Profusely illustrated with line drawings and with hand coloured plates. The binding is in good condition - the spine has been relaid at some point and corners and spine edges have been repaired so the book is tight and firm. With marbled endpapers and signature of Miss Wilson and the number 14 to one of the preliminaries. Internally the book is very clean and bright. The index of illustrations is difficult to interpret as it does not distinguish between text illustrations and plates and appears to randomly list some text illustrations and not others - however, I think the book is lacking a colour plate frontispiece and 2 other plates giving 24 plates present of a possible 27.…

Description:
1856. Second royal octavo edition. Very good +. The royal octavo edition of Birds of America as first published in 1840-44, and was followed by several more editions. This plate is from the second edition, published in 1856, distinct for the colored backgrounds. They are also a little different in that one species is pictured rather than a grouping of birds. This work was done to make Audubon's prints, highly in demand, more affordable for the general public. These hand colored lithographs were printed by J. T. Bowen. Showing the male on a branch of Ipomea.
