William Pickering, London, 1843. Engraved portrait. 8vo (6 5/8 x 4 1/4 inches), pages: xcvi:264; 307; & 386. Contemporary full hard grain dark blue morocco, spines with raised bands and gilt lettered direct, all edges gilt. The bindings by Hayday. Very good, well & strongly bound.Each volume with the armorial bookplate of Arthur Greg and a Christmas gift inscription on on front free endpapers "Maggie Greg from R.H.Greg Xmas 1863".The Manchester liberal politician and manufacturer Robert Hyde Greg [1795-1875) was sent on a grand tour of Europe before joining his familys prosperous textile business. His dissertation on Troy [ published for the author in Manchester in 1823 & very rare) is dedicated to Prince Louis William of Hesse Hombourg, whom the author accompanied on his travels in Greece and Asia Minor.
