The very scarce first edition of this work, in the original gilt decorated morocco binding. Collated, illustrated with eleven hand-coloured plates. Lacking the frontispiece.A truly charming nineteenth century work in which the author Thomas Miller presents 'a resemblance between the flower and the emblem it represents' through short stories, creating 'legends' to demonstrate the way in which individual flowers represent their meanings.With the former owner's inscription of Annie Symonds to the front free endpaper.With sixteen pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.A delightful work from one of the most prolific English working-class writers of the nineteenth century. In the original full morocco binding with pictorial gilt detailing. Boards bright. Rubbing to back strip, joints, and board perimeters. Hinges strained, but firmly held. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound, but with pages 113-115 detached and loosely inserted. Pages bright and generally clean, with the odd spot. Lacking the frontispiece. Very Good
