About This Item
New York: Random House, 1959. Hardcover. Small 4to. Quarter terra cotta cloth with black and silver lettering and grey patterned paper over boards. xiii, 97pp. Near fine. Early (not first) printing of this verse gathering, tight and bright -- and with choice autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a 4¼" X 7½" sheet boldly inscribed and signed by the poet in black ink: "For Harriet Monroe / With the esteem of / another Middle Westerner. / Paul Engle / Oxford / 1934." Monroe (1860-1936) was the founder and long-time editor of "Poetry" magazine -- in whose pages some of these Engle poems first appeared -- and a highly influential critic and poet seminal to the development of poetry in the early 20th century.
