Description:
1808. HASTINGS, Sally. POEMS ON DIFFERENT SUBJECTS. To Which is Added, A Descriptive Account of a Family Tour to the West; In the Year, 1800. In a Letter to a Lady. Lancaster, Pa.: William Dickson, 1808. Limited edition, "Printed and Sold ...for the Benefit of the Authoress" by subscription. 220 pp. 12mo., rebound in 3/4 green leather, marbled paper-covered boards, gilt-stamped title to spine, top-edge gilt. Bookplate to ffep. Spine is sunned to brown. Joints are rubbed and weak, and just starting, but the boards are still attached. Light foxing to one section of text, else clean. It is a very scarce book in a fragile binding. Hastings (1773 - 1812) was a poet of local celebrity in Lancaster, PA at the turn of the 19th century. Her work combines religious sentiment with odes to nature and to acquaintances among her literary circle; her travel diary includes interesting descriptions of what was then the western frontier. (Streeter Sale vol. 2, 834; Howes H-289).

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1872. viii,[9]-252pp. Small octavo. Original slate cloth, spine stamped in gilt. Frontis portrait. Spine extremities a bit frayed, with careful small mends, portrait a bit foxed, some cracking between frontis and title (but cords sound), scattered foxing and a few signatures starting; still, a good, sound copy. An unspecified but later printing of this substantial collection by the prominent Abolitionist, reformer and advocate of equal rights for women, first published in 1866. Mrs Gage inscribed this copy: "Merry Christmas Dear Gussie [/] With the sincere regard [/] of the Author [/] Frances D. Gage [/] 178 St. James Pl' Brooklyn [/] Dec 25 1872." Mrs Gage worked closely with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton, and spent an active career as speaker and organizer, particularly in the Midwest. There is a 1908 ownership signature below the inscription. Uncommon, with a full, signed presentation inscription.

[Olympia, WA], 1935. Silver gelatin composite photograph (250 x 200 mm) with small tear-off monthly calendar for 1936. Inscribed "Merry Christmas, The Bowmans". A few minor nicks and spots at the edges. Excellent, unused condition. A remarkable piece of early aviation ephemera, this calendar was produced as a Christmas greeting by the early female aviator Marguerite (Martie) Bowman (1901-1985) and her husband Leslie, also a pilot. It depicts Bowman flying in her WACO INF biplane, registration number NC625Y, in formation with two others, and includes portraits of Bowman, her husband, and their daughter Larnie Bowman Allen. We have learned from one of the Bowmans' grandchildren that Larnie joined the family profession, becoming a wing-walker at eight and soloing at twelve. The Bowmans established an aviation business together and, during the 1920s, 30s and 40s, Martie Bowman ferried planes from factories and regularly participated in air races. She competed in the 1930 Women's Dixie Air Derby from…

Description:
Unfortunately, not much is known about the photographer Diby Yao Christophe, but his photo book, Du twist à cocody, ou l'art de la natte, is an amazing document of hairstyles from the Ivory Coast of the 1970s.This very scarce book was made between April 1970 and June 1972, in collaboration with the Institut d'Ethno-Sociologie
in Abidjan, which was at the time of publication the capital of the Ivory Coast. Interestingly, the book was published in French and English, by the French publisher Éditions Dalfoz, in 1972, translated by Timothy and Kathryn Weiskel.
Christophe ends his book with this very powerful statement:
"Why do some of our stylish women prefere [sic] bleached hair or wigs to genuine African creations? One's real hair, in my opinion, is worth more than faked hair, and an art evolved over time is always better than imported styles of others. I meet many of you who pretend to be European, trying to dress and act like white women.
Oh, my Black Sisters, why are you trying to forget… Read More
