About This Item

Jedburgh: Printed for the author, by W. Easton, 1825. 168pp. With half-title. Contemporary green sheep, gilt. Slightly rubed to extremities, Some spotting and browning to text. Inscribed (by the author?) 'Robert Davidson, Morebattle 1846' to head of title, very occasional ink underlining to text. The rare, Jedburgh printed second published collection of verse by Morebattle, Roxburghshire poverty-stricken rustic minstrel Robert Davidson (1779-1855). An unheaded leaf following the title forms a charming poetic manifesto, explaining the author's inspiration: 'See Teviotdale romantic charms display...Make simple muses haunt the peasant's shed'. Almost exclusively Scottish, this volume includes 'Lines on hearing that a Monument was Erecting over the Grave of Robert Burns', 'To the Shade of Wallace' and 'Wallace's Farewell, but opens with the Gothic 'The Witch's Cairn', which extends to 15 pages. Rare. COPAC locates copies at Aberdeen, BL and NLS only; OCLC adds copies at HRC and Stanford. Jackson p.475. Johnson 255.. First edition. 12mo.

Terms of Sale

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
