London: Printed for Edward and Charles Dilly, 1770. FIRST EDITION, 6 vols., 8vo, pp. [viii], lvi, 380; [iv], 500; [iv], 475, [1]; [iv], 403, [1]; [iv], 476; [iv], 253, 354-362 (recte 262), [310] + engraved frontispiece in each vol. Contemporary calf, spines divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, red morocco labels, 3rd compartments numbered direct in gilt. Scattered foxing and spotting, sometimes heavy. Rubbed, worn to extremities, some joints cracked but cords holding, most labels lost. The first edition of this lasting and important translation of Plutarch’s Lives, frequently reprinted throughout the nineteenth century. This was the first translation of Plutarch into English done from the original Greek, and though criticised for its prose style, it became the standard version, displacing the one published under Dryden’s name in the 17th century. Established in 1957, McNaughtan's Bookshop is the oldest surviving secondhand and antiquarian bookshop in Scotland. Located in the basement of a listed 1820s tenement building at the top of Edinburgh's Leith Walk, we are the only open shop in Edinburgh holding membership of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association.
