London: Constable & Company Ltd, 1927. Blue leather-bound edition, part of a boxed set "The Plays of Bernard Shaw". Original glassine (like grease-proof paper) dustwrapper is a bit creased, but otherwise a good clean tight copy, with gilt titles and decoration on spine and facsimile signature on front board all still bright. Originally published in this edition in 1926, this is a slightly later reprint from August 1927. Contains the plays "Arms and the Man", "Candida", "The Man of Destiny" and "You Never Can Tell". 320pp.. Full-Leather. Good/Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
Synopsis
Plays Pleasant (1898) comprises four comedies intended to amuse audiences but also to provoke them. Arms and the Man , set in the Balkan mountains, satirizes the romantic view of war and military heroism. Candida presents the complicated relationship between a vicar, his wife, and her young admirer. You Never Can Tell is a light, witty look at an aging suffragette and her family. The Man of Destiny features Napoleon Bonaparte at odds with English mores.
