About This Item

St. Paul's Bibliographies in association with Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Winchester, first edition, 1990. Cloth, 4to, 28 cm,. xxxvii, 450 pp, ills. 7,670 entries. From the blurb: "This is the first comprehensive listing of the considerable body of primary instructional, or "how to draw" books, and non-scientific iconographical. or "pattern" books published for artists and designers, and the ever growing corpus of secondary historical, critical, bibliographical, and biographical scholarship on natural history and human anatomical illustration. Literature on "nature printing" is included and a major feature of this guide is its extensive coverage of literature on nature photography. Photography, first introduced in 1839, was slow to gain acceptance in natural history illustration but eventuaily found its place and has now grown to achieve equal status with the artist in the preparation of modern illustration. The arrangement of this handlist of about 7670 references, dating from the early 18th century, is by subject with major sections on "Nature in general " "Plants," "Animals," and "The Human Body," each including four categories of literature: primary literature on hand-created illustration methods from the 16th century to the present day; secondary literature on the history and criticism of natural history illustration (inciuding catalogues of collections, exhibitions and displays of original artworks or book illustrations); selected literature on the history of plant, animal, and anatomical representation in art; and primary and secondary literature on illustrative photography from the 1840s to the present day. The final section is "Artist biographies," which includes biographies, critical studies. and exhibition catalogues of individual artists, illustrators and photographers. Extensive title, subject and name indexes provide access to these classified lists. Plant, Animal and Anatomical illustration in Art and Science is primarily intended for historians of science, but is atso intended to be useful to the artists, illustrators, students and amateurs who create images, as well as to the librarians, bibliographers, antiquarian booksellers, and others who encounter plant, animal, and anatomical illustration in the course of their activities. This bibliography undoubtedly will help to create greater appreciation and understanding of the role played by instructional literature in the development of plant, animal, and anatomical themes in the history of art and scientific illustration." Balay, EA220 : "Within sections, entries are arranged chronologically except for collections and exhibitions subsections where entries are by country and institution, and section 6 [artist biographies], which is alphabetical by artist. Entries contain full bibliographic details with some notes to reference sources and catalogs consulted. Near Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper.
