Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

Side and lower edges are untrimmed. Dust jacket is lightly soiled and sunned to degrees, heavier on the folds. Additional photos upon request.

In the mid-19th-century, Charles Knight published an illustrated edition of the works of Shakespeare, a set that proved to be very popular throughout the English-speaking world, into the late 1800s. It included all of the famous works one would expect to be in a collection of Shakespeare, but unlike other editions of the same era, this particular example features the impressive full-page engravings of character portraits.

This 1878 American edition was published in Philadelphia by Amies. An impressive example of Shakespeare.

This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." This is a massive, custom three-quarter leather bound volume of 169 issues of "THE YOUTH'S COMPANION" newspaper/magazine from the 1850's. Although the label on the front cover states "1852-1855," one issue from 1850 is included. "A Family Paper, Devoted to Piety, Morality, Brotherly Love - No Sectarianism, No Controversy." The Youth's Companion was a weekly magazine/newspaper published by Nathaniel Willis in Boston from 1827 to 1929. Each issue contains 4 pages and features an engraving on the first page.
