Containing essays such as 'On things that cost nothing', 'On Laughter', 'On Anger and Admiration', 'On Peculiarities and Predilections', 'On Mysterious Advertisements', 'On Terms used in War' and 'On the Beauties of Creation'.Written by George Mogridge (1787-1854), a 19th century writer of religious tracts and works for children. He published under numerous pseudonyms, including Jeremy Jaunt, Ephraim Holding, Peter Parley and his most popular Old Humphrey, as used for this work. Mogridge published some two hundred odd works, with many still in print today.'Old Humphrey' wrote innumerable articles for the Religious Tract Society, with the pseudonym becoming more of a character for Mogridge, playing an elderly and warm-hearted man.With a gift inscription dated 1871, 'Annie German, A Birthday Offering from her Children'An uncommon and smart work. In a contemporary full cloth binding. Externally very smart, with just some general wear to the tail of the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Gift inscription to the half title page. Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
