About This Item
This drama by poet Robert Browning is a mix of poetry and prose, first published in 1841 as the first of a series in his Bells and Pomegranates series, then republished in 1849. The drama initially caused controversy because of its portrayal of "disreputable characters" but gained popularity and was described as "perhaps the most beautiful of Browning's dramas.
