About This Item

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1940. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First edition. Red cloth as issued (the 1966 re-issue in blue cloth is often mistaken for the first edition). A bit spine cocked, and some foxing on the endpapers, very good in good only dustwrapper sunned on the spoine and with several nicks and tears. Inscribed by the author: "Inscribed to Ralph Sargent and Louise, 1940 with thanks from their guest of November 13, 1958. Glenway W." The inscription is a trifle cryptic, we assume the book was inscribed in 1958, but he was referring to the mpublishing date of the book (1940). A splendid, in many ways perfect little novel that has recently undergone a revival, and which has always been uncommon.

Synopsis

Glenway Wescott (1901-1987) was the author of the novels  The Grandmothers  and  Apartment in Athens , in addition to several collections of stories and essays. His life—as revealed in his published journals and a joint biography of him and his lover, Monroe Wheeler—has been the subject of increasing interest in recent years. Michael Cunningham is the author of the novels  A Home at the End of the World ,  Flesh and Blood ,  The Hours  (winner of the Pen/Faulkner Award & Pulitzer Prize), and  Specimen Days . He lives in New York.
