Taylor's most ambitious productions include The Picture of St John (1866). 'My conception of the poem was wholly and intensely subjective. I commenced 'The Picture of St. John' in June, 1850, with no very clear conception, and no more serious purpose than to write a narrative poem of love and sorrow, with an artist as the hero'. He is most remembered for his poetic and excellent translation of Goethe's Faust (2 vols, Boston, 1870-71) in the original metres.".
