Obviously the location of those acres has not changed but that ground, now studded with houses, is very much in the city of Waterloo. In some ways the transformation of this farm from country to city mirrors the change in Ontario society. Years ago many people had their roots in agriculture. Now very few have a day to day experience with a farm, their farm. The painting on the front of this book of my grandfather's herd of dual-purpose Shorthorns in the field at Westside farm shows the start of my family's journey from the country. At the time shown here, 1920, my grandfather was a leading breeder of dual-purpose Shorthorns in Canada. He was also well known for his apple orchard. I spend many happy days with my grandparents. Yet tragedy has visited this idyllic scene. When I was still a child my uncle died in an accident in this lane. Now I paint to make my living but, like many Canadians, I'm just one generation removed from farm life."
