Printed for Harvey and Darton, London, 1824 (though the frontispiece also claims publication by the same pair, Mar. 1, 1825); 12mo, 110 x 170mm; pp [iv], 200; engraved frontispiece and eight other such plates; quarter red roan, pictorial voards; covers wron and rubbed, particularly on the corners and along the edges; internally cracked in a couple of places but still quite firm; lacks front fly; some offsetting from the engraved plates but generally clean throughout; holograph ownership inscription 'Mary A Lees. August 25th 1871' on the front pastedown. ... ... ... The work is essentially a collection of accounts of English history and wider written in the form of a story of two young ladies who are shown round a private picture gallery, the various images being the pretext for accounts of the people or the events depicted - the crusades, Henry VIII, Elizabeth Tudor, and so on.
