Catalogue encompasses the work of one of the great photography pioneers, Linnaeus Tripe (1822-1902). Celebrated for his photographs of art, architecure, monuments, and landscapes of India and Burma in the 1850s, he produced a series of superb artistic calotype images that won gold medals. Part of a British mission to Burma in 1855, he took photos published in "Views of Burma" a few years later. In 1857 he became official photographer to the Madras government, taking pictures of both buildings and residents. His combination of aesthetics and accurate documentation were well noted.
