About This Item

Duthie, Edinburgh, 1868. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. BALLANTYNE, R.M. Photographs of Edinburgh by Archibald Burns, Glasgow et al: Andrew Duthie et al., no date (1868, according to British Library). Octavo, priority unknown to me, pp. 84, 3 (ads), green cloth boards with gilt lettering inside gilt border to upper panel, 12 plates with albumen prints by Archibald Burns, measuring about 8x10cm. "Burns was based in Edinburgh between 1858, when he is first recorded as a member of the Photographic Society of Scotland, and his death in the early 1880s. Burns made his living principally from selling stock-images of Edinburgh for the burgeoning tourist market. He also provided photographs to illustrate books of Edinburgh," says the website of the National Library of Scotland. OCLC locate copies at 7 U.S. libraries, many more at U.K. and Canadian institutions, but it is scarce in the marketplace. Duthie published various books like this, including "Photographs of Dublin" in 1867. Condition of this book: Boards darkened, rubbed at edges, cloth is bubbling in spots. Leaves also darkened in spots, some of the photos are loose (but present), some have glue stains. The Knox House photo shown below is probably the worst of them. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Scotland; 19th century; Travel & Places. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 52164. .
