About This Item
London: The Trustees of the British Museum, 1932. First edition. Hardcover. g. Folio. Portfolio with 12 plates. All plates illustrated with b/w photographs of casts of Persian wall reliefs. As Cecil Harcourt-Smith states in the exhibition pamphlet, "the casts here described are taken from moulds procured by an expedition sent to Persepolis in 1891. ...Whereas at Susa the remains are chiefly representative of one period, that of Artaxerxes Mnemon (404-359 B.C.), at Persepolis sculptures are still standing which show a fairly continuous development of Achaemenid art from the reign of Darius son of Hystaspes (522-486 B.C.) to that of Artaxerxes Ochus (359-338 B.C.). Plates include the Upper and Lower Part of Throne Relief from the Hall of the Hundred Columns, Frieze from the Hall of Xerxes, Central Panel of Frieze from the Stairway of Artaxerxes III Ochus, and reliefs of a Winged Genius from the Period of Cyrus the Great, a King Stabbing a Monster, a Bodyguard, and a King Stabbing a Lion. Pamphlet titled Temporary Exhibition of Casts from Persepolis laid-in. Age wear and staining on boards. Binding fair, interior overall very good.
