About This Item

New York, 1914. Very good condition overall. A group photograph of Hoover with 44 other men. Hoover is seated at center with 12 other men, the rest of the group standing behind. The photo is taken on the roof of a building at Princeton, with a domed building in the background. Many men signed the photograph in the lower border, but Hoover did not. He is noted as "Mr. Herbert Hoover" in red hand lettering below image, with 34 other signatures below the image.

Next to Hoover is Caspar Whitney (1864-1929), an American author, editor, explorer, outdoors man and war correspondent. He originated the concept of the All-American team in college football in 1889 when he worked for Harper's Magazine. During World War I, Whitney was involved in Europe with the Commission for Relief in Belgium (1915), and then war correspondent of the New-York Tribune (1917-1918). (Wikipedia)

The CRB existence depended upon the belligerent governments of Britain, Germany, and France permitting a newly improvised, neutral humanitarian agency to import food through the blockade and supervise its delivery to Belgian communities. (1914-1918online encyclopedia)

Signatures include:
Joseph A. Green, W.H. Sperry (?), Mr. H.... Tuck, St. Febanlite (?), David R. Barrows, Chas. N. Leach, Lewis Richards, G. Bulles, Thomas E. Oliver, Prentis N. Gray, L. Bersts (?).

Clark, Frederich Eikstein, G. Richardson, R. Arrowsmith, Clark M Torrey, Alfred C.B. Fletcher, Guillermo Hall, John Simpson, F. D. Stephens, C.D. Curtis (a Charles Curtis was Hoover's vice president but the signature is inconclusive), T. Wureen (?).

B&w photo 10.5 x 18.5" tipped onto tan board 13.5 x 21.25". "Mr. Herbert Hoover" in red hand lettering below image, with signatures of 34 others surrounding. In an old black wood frame 15 x 23". Verso of frame has label "D.B. & Co. Engravings Etchings and Picture Frames, 601 Madison Ave. N.Y." Image clear, dusty in upper left quadrant, old paper backing torn but still attached.
