About This Item

Trenton: Windsor Art Studio, 1889. Unbound. Very Good. Albumen team photograph of the Mercer Base Ball Club. Image size 9.75" x 8" on a 14" x 11" card mount, with printed caption as above, along with the surnames of each player. Studio label on the verso. Image slightly faded but else near fine; small chips and cracks on the mount, repair with canvas tape on the verso, and thus very good. Image of ten uniformed young gentlemen, surrounding a manager in street clothes balancing a trophy on his knee. The four men in the front row are equipped with glove, ball, or bats. We could find little about the Mercer Base Ball Club. Trenton was a relative hotbed of early baseball and one is tempted to imagine that this team might have played in some fashion against the Cuban Giants, the first all-black professional baseball team, who made Trenton their home between 1886-1889 (and who finished second in 1889 in the independent Middle States League). In any event, an attractive and pleasing good size image of an early Trenton base ball club.
