About This Item
Halifax, nd. Very good. One 14 cm b&w photo on 19 cm grey card. Some chips to card. Spot on bottom left. Ink inscription on rear: "No. 44 Corporal A. S. Bellingham. 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. Raised for Service in South Africa 1902. Bellingham lived in Winnepeg [sic], Manitoba."
In 1896, the firm of Gauvin & Gentzel was founded in Halifax by partners Adolphe E. Gentzel and George A. Gauvin. Gentzel relocated to Winnipeg in 1905, carrying on the business under the Gauvin Gentzel name. This particular photo was taken in Halifax, likely just before Bellingham sailed for South Africa
