Oxonii (Oxford): E Theatro Sheldoniano, 1720. First edition. Hardcover. poor to vg. Elephant folio (15 3/4 x 9 3/4"). [40], 704pp (Vol. 1); [2], 705-1411, [1], vi, [42]pp (Vol. 2). Contemporary full calf. Raised bands. Large engraved title vignette (4 3/4 x 6 1/4) depicting the Sheldonian Theatre by Michael Burghers, and dated 1704. Title page handsigned by Edward Harwood.* Imprimatur signed by Robert Shippen (1675-1745), Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University from 1718 to 1723. Each book housed in a modern orange cloth covered clamshell box, with gold lettering to spine.
Published posthumously by his friend Anthony Hall, the antiquary, John Hudson's collected works of Josephus in two volumes is printed in double columns in Greek and Latin. Brunet III, 569. Dibdin II, 132. Graesse III, 480.

Bindings heavily rubbed, with abrasion to leather. Both front covers are detached but present. Upper fore-edge of front free endpaper and fly leaf of first volume partly chipped. Title page partly age-toned / foxed, with small black stain. Clear water-staining at upper corner of pages throughout, slightly affecting lettering from page 593 on in first volume. Text in Greek and Latin. Clamshell boxes in overall very good, bindings in poor, interior in good- (the last 112 pages of first volume) to very good condition. About the editor: John Hudson (1662 -1719), was an English classical scholar, who was educated at The Queen's College, Oxford, and spent the rest of his life at the University. He was appointed as a Fellow of University College, Oxford in 1686, Bodley's librarian in 1701, and in 1711 principal of St Mary Hall, Oxford. His political views stood in the way of his preferment in the church and university. As an editor and commentator, he enjoyed a high reputation both at home and abroad.
