About This Item

Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1962. First THUS. Hardcover. Good/Good. Signed by Other. First of second edition, 1962. Good in good lightly soiled and chipped unclipped dust jacket. Signed by the incomparable "Philosopher Magician", Eugene Burger on the front endpaper. The second edition: "Originally Translated and Introduced by David Swenson; New Introduction and Commentary by Niels Thulstrup; Translation revised and Commentary Translated by Howard Hong. Laid in, a paper of handwritten citations from Kierkegaard, reflections on the "stage of life", and "the power of death", "because life does not have the power to captivate us as death does". The provenance of this item is the library of a fellow Yale student who was studying Kierkegaard at the time Burger was at Yale divinity school. Burger graduated in 1964. This signature does not match Burger's later 'stage' signature. But listening to the recently deceased 'philosopher magician' on You Tube ("On Death"), it seems far, far more than likely -- that this is his copy of "Philosophical Fragments" by Kierkegaard. We are betting on it. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Synopsis

Philosophical Fragments was a philosophical work written by Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard in 1844 and the first of three works written under the pseudonym Johannes Climacus. The question involves how knowledge can be known, and Climacus discusses how the theories of Socratic recollection and Christian divinity can inform the learner of truth. At the same time, it is an important early text in existentialist philosophy.
