About This Item
Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1942. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Four illustrations. Fascinating biography of Charles Edward Pickett (1820-82), a native of Virginia who moved to Oregon (1842) and then to San Francisco (1846) where he became a journalist, a dabbler in the law, and a crusading, though decidedly eccentric, political pamphleteer. The subjects of his quixotic attacks against wealth and western oligarchies included William C. Ralston, Leland Stanford, the Silver Kings, and Stephen J. Field, prompting historian Hubert Howe Bancroft to dub Pickett "San Francisco's Diogenes." 12mo. Original burgundy cloth binding, with gilt titles. A fine copy in a fine, price-clipped dust jacket. Signed by Author.
