About This Item
Sydney, Cremorne: Angus & Robertson, 1972. New ed.. Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, good condition (in good dustjacket), black & white illustrations including frontispiece, minimal edgewear jacket (reverse side foxed, corners trimmed, spine little faded), two stains bottom edge book, few foxed spots endpapers, edges toned (pages lightly toned), owner's written name partly rubbed out (scuff mark front free flyleaf). 366 pp. M. Barnard Eldershaw relates the story of Governor Phillip, but re-created against the social and political background of the first years of settlement at Sydney Cove. A very readable history that combines literary artistry with an imaginative reconstruction of the soundly based facts. The book has been written in the humanist tradition which has brought Phillip to life in the mixed-up world of the infant settlement's most difficult years. (New edition. Originally published, 1938.).
