About This Item

London: Th Dawks; Th Basset et al, 1682. Leather. Good Only. 7" by 4.5". None. The scarce second edition of Thomas Salmon's translation of the noted medical text 'Pharmacopoeia Londinensis'. The first owner of this work was Dr Philip Wyatt Crowther (1752-1804) and Dr William Lodwick Crowther (1817-1885). Dr William was an honorary Medical officer at the Hobart Hospital. He was also appointed to the Court of Medical Examiners. In 1878 he was elected Premier of Tasmania. He partook in the controversial mutilation of the last 'full-blooded' Tasmanian Aboriginal male, William Lane. This book is from the Crowther family library. With the prior owner's contemporary notations to the verso of front endpaper regarding medicines and medical methods. Lacking the title page and a blank. A scarce work. With the errata leaf to the rear as called for. This translation of 'Pharmacopoeia Londinensis' was extremely popular with readers and went through five editions during the sixteenth century. William Salmon was a medical empiric and author. He wrote many Almanacks to direct the taking of his medicines and learned much of his craft accompanying his master in many travels. He had his own practice by 1671 and offered services to those denied by hospital. It is noted by the ODNB that Salmon drew most of the information for his writings from his own extensive personal library. A scarce copy of this work, with fascinating provenance. In a full calf binding, rebound. Externally, sound with heavy rubbing to the spine, joints and extremities. Split to the front joint at the head. Front hinge is strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper. Loss to the gutter of A2 which affects the first word of the final eighteen lines. Repair to the bottom of A2v which has resulted in a loss to the text, being the author's name. Small loss to the gutter of A3 affecting the first word of several lines. Tear to X5 at the fore edge, with loss to the text. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned, more so to the first and last few pages. Scattered spots to pages. Heavier to the first and last few pages. Good Only
