About This Item
Eveleigh Nash, London, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 335 pages (complete). A charming book of memories of travel through, and living in South Africa at the turn of the twentieth century. Mrs Maturin has an engaging, entertaining turn of phrase and view of life: "Nov. 30, 1904 ... I have heard of a dear little cottage in a Dutch dorp, twelve miles out of Johannesburg, where, so far, they have only had one murder, one house blown up by dynamite, another set fire to by a man who had insured it and was on his last legs financially ... and four housebreakings by Chinese in four months ... there is a scramble for it because it is so safe." The boards have scuffing, wear, knocks to corners. They are placid. The contents are most pleasing. The paper edges are rough. The pages are clean, clear, creamy, thick, very healthy and eager, comfortable and contented. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
