Fine. Le Petit Moissonneur des Théâtres. à Paris : Le Fuel, libraire, Editeur, Rue St. Jacques, No. 54, [1826]. Hand-colored plates, portraits of actors and actresses in roles for which they were remembered. John Grand-Carteret dates this title vers 1825 and lists it as Number 2030 (as 32mo) in his exhaustive Les Almanachs Français Bibliographie-Iconographie, Paris 1896. Daniel François Schleurleer in his Almanakken der Muziekbibliotek dates this very rare title to 1827 and as being 16mo. Listed as N. 157 in the Revue Encyclopédique; ou Analyse Raisonée; Tome XL, Paris: 1828, lists it as bound in-18, with 192 pages avec gravures coloriées. A copy was reported sold in 1893 at the sale of the library of Damascène Morgand, I: 4178. This copy is in-16, 105 mm x 70 mm, [1 blank; half-title, with Imprimerie de Jules Didot Ainé, rue du Pont-de-Lodi, no. 6 on the verso; interlined frontispiece of a boy harvesting a sheaf in the Champ de Thalie; 192 pages of text; Le Souvenir des Dames, with engraved title-page, 14 pages, for each of the twelve months for memoranda; a final blank]. 14 engravings, 13 of the portraits of the actors and actresses of the day. Bound in quarter tan calf on marbled boards. Rebacked, otherwise a fine copy. Among the other portraits of actors and actresses is a portrait of Mlle. Saint-Ange in the role of Marguerite from LEtameur, ou La Place Maubert, Tableau en un Acte written by MM. Gabriel, Dumersan, et Brazier which played at the Théâtre des Variétés . Dayre), with marbled boards, top edge gilt; both orig. wrappers, in good condition, are bound in. - Pierre Bonnard designed the front-cover with a watercolour drawing. - Text-pages browned (as always), and otherwise a very attractive copy. - First edition of the novel, d'un libertinage élégant, set in the 18th century, in Touraine, where Boylesve grew up. The book became, in the first half of the 20th century, one of the most illustrated French literary texts. - This copy has the mention cinquième mille at the base of the front-cover, but note that in the same year of its publication, 1902, the Editions de La Revue Blanche closed down, and its stock was taken over by the publisher Eugène Fasquelle. Future editions were not similar.

The spine is embossed with gilt scrollwork, title and author. The hinge is tight and the pages slightly yellowed with age, but still in fine, readable condition. Red Silk bookmark is still attached and faded only on the surface outside the book. No internal markings, bookplates or tears to pages. A remarkably preserved book for its age! There are no other similar copies of this vintage for sale on the Web!
