About This Item
Petersboro, N.Y.??], 1854. Good. Single sheet folded to form two leaves with last page blank. 31 cm. Chipped and quite ragged along top edge, but with no loss of text. Also some modest chipping and soiling along right edges. Smith, a wealthy, white New Yorker, was an important financial supporter of abolitionists and the early Republican Party. According to the text of this letter, Whigs successfully spread lies about Smith and the Kansas-Nebraska Bill which caused many abolitionists, including William Goodell, to attack Smith for betraying the abolitionist cause. This wordy public "letter" is Smith's attempt to set the record straight and proclaim his continuing commitment to the abolitionist cause.
