About This Item
Edition information. First edition and first printing of the book and jacket. The dust jacket features the price of $1.50 on the front panel (the second issue had a price of $2.50 on the inner front flap). The book itself features a date of October, 1911 on the copyright page and the Scribner's seal (later editions/printings were stated). The first edition was released simultaneously by different publishers in New York (Charles Scribner's Sons) and the London (Hodder & Stoughton).
Condition. The book itself is stunning in every way. The jacket, notoriously fragile and equally as scarce, ranks among the finest a collector might find. This gray and gold jacket precedes the second issue, which featured a green design on a white background. The American and British publishers quickly switched over to the green and white design as the first issue jacket was prone to extreme fading. Other such copies show this kind of wear, which is particularly harmful to the aesthetic. This jacket lacks such fading. The principal fault is a slight misalignment of the jacket, such that the spine panel slightly encroaches on the back panel. A one-inch tear at the junction of the bottom front panel and spine was strengthened discreetly by an expert hand.
Synopsis
Peter and Wendy (1911) is the title of James M. Barrie's novelization of his most famous play, Peter Pan: or, The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up (1904). Inspired by Barrie's friendship with the Llewelyn Davies family, both the play and the novel tell the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous young boy who can fly, and his adventures on the island of Neverland with Wendy Darling and her brothers. The novel follows the play closely, though its final chapter is an addition to the original work. Peter and Wendy was first published in 1911 by Hodder & Stoughton in the United Kingdom and Charles Scribner's Sons in the United States. In 1929, Barrie gave the copyright to the works featuring Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Britain's leading children's hospital.
