About This Item
This is a rare edition of Persuasion with Maximilien Vox's highly sought-after colour illustrations. There are 8 full page colour illustrated plates with a black and white line illustration before each chapter. Vox employs a blend of line drawing and delicate pastel watercolor to depict the novel's scenes. During the creation of these illustrations, the Art Deco movement flourished in France, and its impact is clearly evident in Vox's choice of subtle hues.Good Condition. Half bound blue leather with blue cloth covered boards and gilt titles to spine. Debossed gilt school stamp to front board and prize plate to front pastedown. Front free end paper has some pen scribbles. Binding and hinges are firm. Pages and illustrations are clean. Gilt top-edge. Boards have light edge-wear with some scuffs to spine ends and corners. Light marks to rear board.
Synopsis
Written in her final illness, Persuasion is Jane Austen's finest novel. Eight years ago, Anne Elliot bowed to pressure from her family and made the decision not to marry the man she loved, Captain Wentworth. Now circumstances have conspired to bring him back into her social circle and Anne finds her old feelings for him reignited. However, when they meet again Wentworth behaves as if they are strangers and seems more interested in her friend Louisa. In this, her final novel, Jane Austen tells the story of a love that endures the tests of time and society with humor, insight, and tenderness.
