About This Item
First Edition. Very scarce
Hodges Figgis, Dublin 1882. In publisher's original binding.
The author was a newspaper proprietor and ardent Irish Nationalist but after disposing of his newspaper titles became antagonistic to his former Nationalist associates and began to supply information to their political opponents.
He attempted to destroy the career of Charles Stewart Parnell by producing forged letters purporting to demonstrate that Parnell had supported the Phoenix Park murders. The letters were proven to be forgeries and Parnell survived politically.
Green cloth bound boards are clean. Gilt lettering on spine. Head and tail of spine somewhat frayed. Joints a little rubbed. Front hinge starting but holding firm. Rear joint and endpaper loose but holding. Generally book is a little shaken. Text block good.
Internally clean with only very occasional spotting. No markings or inscriptions except for previous sale price and owner stamp on title page (see images).
Provenance: Housed in the library of Professor's Library, St. Mary's College, Galway. (see image of title page).
