Each volume illustrated by a frontispiece, numerous full-page maps, with additional illustrations; volume two with a fold-out map and a facsimile of the terms of Lee's surrender. Nevins 59. Grant completed work on his memoirs shortly before his death in 1885. The books were published by Mark Twain and his nephew Charles Webster (co-owners of Charles L. Webster & Company), and these were the first two volumes in the Shoulder Strap series. A set of one of the most important memoirs of the Civil War. A small split to the paper on the front hinge of volume one, light foxing to a few spots in the pageblock.
